ai_search function

A SQL function (Beta) that answers a natural-language question from up to 10 knowledge sources per call: AI Search indexes and, since September 24, 2026, Lakebase synced tables with Lakebase Search turned on. It writes optimized search queries, retrieves and deduplicates results across the sources, reranks them and by default writes a grounded answer; the generate_citations option, added September 8, 2026, shows which chunks support that answer. It needs Databricks Runtime 18.2 or above (serverless environment version 3 or above on serverless compute) and runs in notebooks, the SQL editor, jobs and Lakeflow Spark Declarative Pipelines.
