The VARIANT data type stores semi-structured data, such as JSON from streaming sources, APIs and schemaless databases, in a single column, so upstream schema changes do not require pipeline updates. Variant shredding, released alongside it, stores common fields as columns in the underlying Parquet files so queries run close to the speed of structured data.
