Databricks CLI v1.20.0 removed the Terraform engine, making the direct engine the only bundle deployment path
The main change in October was the end of the Terraform deployment engine for Databricks Asset Bundles. CLI v1.20.0, released on October 7, removed it. Users had to move to the direct engine or stay on v1.19.x [12]. The same release fixed large integer corruption in API commands, added group-level run-as support in bundles, and widened authentication options for Databricks Apps [12]. The VS Code extension followed the CLI. Version 2.20.0 migrated bundle deployment state to the direct engine and began raising an error when a configured workspace ID did not match the connected workspace [13]. Version 2.21.0 then dropped the Terraform engine and its bundled binary, restored default TLS certificate verification for SDK calls, and sorted folders alphabetically in the Workspace File System view [9].
The month closed with two further CLI releases. CLI v0.191.1, on October 28, changed authentication so that small wrapper scripts, such as launcher scripts or version manager shims, were no longer rejected as the legacy Python CLI. Only the pip-installed entry point is rejected now, and a path set in DATABRICKS_CLI_PATH or databricks_cli_path skips the check [5]. The Java SDK v0.172.0 carried the same fix [3]. On October 29, v1.23.0 made `databricks ssh connect` provide `claude` and `codex` on dedicated clusters and in serverless IDE sessions. It also added `GPU_1xRTX6000` workload support and `workspace.sync_mode`, which replaces the deprecated `presets.source_linked_deployment` [2]. Extension v2.23.0 bundled that CLI and added a setting to stop it writing Jupyter cell-marker settings to workspace settings [1]. Extension v2.22.0 stopped bundle sub-project discovery from blocking the extension host and exposed bundle views in Remote SSH mode [8].
Community posts that month covered Genie Code outside the workspace [11], running jobs and pipelines as a group [10], and two Lakeflow Connect connectors: NetSuite at GA [6] and LinkedIn Ads in Beta [7].
