Recent discussions highlight Databricks' enhanced integration with Power BI, particularly through Serverless SQL Warehouses which have significantly boosted Power BI performance for some users 3. The community is actively debating the optimal strategy for Serverless SQL Warehouses 2 and when to choose Databricks over tools like Power BI or Tableau 1. While not directly Power BI-related, new Databricks features like watermark-based incremental ingestion could further improve data freshness for BI tools 4.

Why do people use databricks vs say power bi or tableau

Hi im curious to know why organisations have like tableau and power bi and then data bricks. Like what's the point in all 3. If all your materliased views are in data bricks and you can connect and make reports etc then shouldn't that be the single source of truth? Like what makes someone use tableau or power BI aside from the fact that data isn't in databricks or you want to do advanced visualisations? Would appreciate some thoughts please.

Serverless SQL Warehouses Strategy

Hi, we're a big industrial company and have some pretty diverse use cases in terms of data volume, speed requirements etc. Many of them are quite sporadic (serving data to PowerBI dashboards which are queried a few times per day, but need to be performant then). We are currently thinking on how to provision SQL Serverless Warehouses to our users. How do you do this in your companies: \- Do you have one (or a few) larger warehouses that serve all different use cases? Or \- Do you create / have users create their own warehouses per use case? \- Or do you use a/multiple shared classic warehouses running 24/7? Cost allocation wise the latter one is easier to track, but from a compute cost point of view I imagine the former one is probably more efficient?

Databricks for 500 GB of data. Worth it or too expensive?

We have an on-prem SQL Server with about 500 GB of data. The goal is to move the data to the cloud with proper data governance. We decided to go with Azure since we are already in the Microsoft ecosystem. My current plan is to use a medallion architecture: Raw parquet Bronze → Silver → Gold Main use cases are dashboards and ML pipelines. A few thoughts/questions: 1. We were considering Microsoft Fabric, but I have heard it is stronger for Power BI use cases and may not be as mature for ML pipelines. 2. Databricks seems more mature for engineering and ML, but I am wondering if it is too expensive or overkill for 500 GB of data. Our planned budget is around 1,000 to 1,500 USD per month. Would Databricks or Fabric be overkill at this scale? Or is Databricks still worth it if we care about governance, ML pipelines, and long-term scalability? Experts, would love to hear your thoughts.
