Databricks certification cost, the full list, and where to start

Databricks' public certification catalog lists 16 live credentials: seven accreditations that cost nothing (four of them only for Databricks customers and partners), eight proctored exams, and one renewal exam. A Databricks certification exam costs $200 per attempt, plus local tax where charged; a retake is the same fee after a 14-day wait, and the credential is valid for two years. Which certification to take depends on your role, but our default recommendation is the same for most readers: the free one-hour Databricks Fundamentals course first, then the Data Engineer Associate exam.

Where Databricks pages disagree, and they often do, we print both; the same goes for our own Databricks certifications catalog, which counts 17 credentials and nine free because it lists two partner-only credentials and not yet the renewal exam.

Every Databricks certification and accreditation in one table

The Databricks certification overview has three tabs, Accreditations, Certifications, and Renewals and Bridge Certifications; its only label is "Popular", on the three fundamentals courses, with no "New" or "Beta" badge anywhere.

Three things it cannot show. The renewal exam is the only paid exam with a real prerequisite, a Data Engineer Associate credential that has expired or is within two months of expiring; every other paid exam page says "Prerequisites: None, but related training highly recommended" (the Platform Architect pages ask for "Related training in Databricks Academy"). Three exams are gone: Hadoop Migration Architect in 2024, Professional Data Scientist and Azure Databricks Associate Platform in 2022. And the two partner-only credentials our catalog lists sit behind the Partner Academy login, where we could verify nothing, so they are not in the table.

The $200 fee, and the costs behind it

The fee is $200 per attempt on the FAQ, on every exam page and in the Webassessor catalog, Associate and Professional alike, plus local tax where charged (Japan adds 10% at checkout). Retakes are where the real cost hides: fail and you can register again after 14 days, as often as you like, at full price every time, with no free retake vouchers; dodging the wait under another name or email gets your certification denied or revoked. Reschedule at least 72 hours ahead, the widest window Databricks' pages give, or pay a fee. The real cost is time: Databricks recommends six months of hands-on experience before any exam and the Professional guide a year; the study-hour estimates on our certifications catalog (30 to 50 for the Associate, 60 to 100 for the Professional) are ours, since Databricks publishes none.

Discounts exist, but databricks.com publishes no percentage; its knowledge base reserves vouchers for Databricks events, beta exams, partner organizations and pre-purchased credits. The one dated public route in September 2026 is the Advanced Learning Festival, September 16 to October 14, on community.databricks.com: finish every module in a Customer Academy learning pathway during the window for 50% off any certification, with vouchers sent October 19 to your Academy email. Partner-firm staff get a separate discount through the Partner Academy, of a size Databricks states nowhere. The full price table is on our certification cost page.

Which certification to take first: the path by role

Data engineer: Fundamentals, then the Associate

Databricks Fundamentals is not a certification and costs nothing: four short videos and a quiz for a badge, about an hour by the Databricks page. The old Lakehouse Fundamentals address redirects to it, though Databricks' training page still lists that name. Then the Data Engineer Associate, offered in four languages and the only exam with a renewal; its May 4, 2026 guide puts Lakeflow Jobs at 16% and CI/CD at 10%. The Data Engineer Professional (59 questions, 120 minutes) wants a year of hands-on work first; take it, and our Data Engineer Professional practice set, once you have run pipelines in production.

Analyst

The Data Analyst Associate: 45 questions, 90 minutes, English only, ANSI SQL throughout, and AI/BI Genie spaces (the guide's term; the Databricks docs now call them Genie Agents) at 12%, so build one before you sit. Our Data Analyst Associate practice set covers those domains.

Machine learning

There has been no data scientist certification since August 22, 2022, when the Professional Data Scientist exam was deprecated; the nearest thing is the Machine Learning Associate, its name on the exam page and in the guide (the overview's "ML Engineer" tab is a role label). It is 48 questions, all ML code in Python, and its guide is the oldest in the catalog, dated March 1, 2025; our Machine Learning Associate practice set follows it. The Professional recommends 1+ years of hands-on work and weights ML Ops as heavily as model development, 44% each.

Generative AI and agents

The free Generative AI Fundamentals course, then the Generative AI Engineer Associate, where application development is 30% and deployment 22%; its March 18, 2026 guide covers Agent Bricks, MCP servers and AI Gateway, and our Generative AI Engineer Associate practice set is written to it. Context Engineer Associate comes after; its page recommends six months of context engineering work, and its guide weights knowledge retrieval and Genie configuration at 20% and memory architecture at 18%. The free 90-minute AI Agent Fundamentals course sits between the two.

Platform admin: the AWS, Azure and GCP accreditations

There is no AWS- or Azure-specific paid Databricks certification and no paid admin exam (the Azure Databricks Associate Platform exam was deprecated in 2022); the cloud-named credentials are the free AWS, Azure and GCP Platform Architect accreditations, 20 questions, no time limit, online and unproctored, 80% to pass. Take the one for your cloud, then Data + AI Platform Administrator: 25 questions, no time limit, no pass mark published; both expire after one year.

Is there a Databricks solutions architect certification?

Not in the public catalog; the closest are the three Platform Architect accreditations above. Our catalog lists a partner-only Solutions Architect Champion, which we could not verify past the Partner Academy login; the program is described in our guide to becoming a Partner Champion.

Which Spark certification, and what does it cost?

The Associate Developer for Apache Spark, listed on Webassessor as "Databricks Certified Associate Developer for Apache Spark - Python": all code is Python, and neither the page nor the guide names a Spark version, whatever the "Spark 3 certification" searches suggest. It costs the same $200 as every other Databricks exam, 45 questions in 90 minutes, and it tests Spark, not the Databricks platform, so it is the one credential here that still counts if your Spark runs elsewhere. Our opinion on payoff: an Associate is a filter that gets a resume past the first read, and a Professional is a signal you have run the thing. Neither replaces a project you can show, and if your daily work is on another platform, only the Spark exam carries over.

How to pass: format, proctoring, and where to practice

Databricks exams are delivered by Kryterion; you register and book on Webassessor under the Databricks catalog, choosing online or a test center, and the account name must match the government ID you will show. Every exam except the online-only Data Engineer Associate renewal is offered online or at a test center, though four guides (both Machine Learning exams, Generative AI Engineer, Context Engineer) still say online proctored only. The FAQ says exams run 90 to 120 minutes, usually with 45 to 60 scored questions, plus unscored items that can push the delivered count higher; the 60-minute, 25-question renewal exam is the exception. No test aids, not even API documentation, and you must be 18.

The proctoring rules in the Databricks terms are strict: a clear desk, external monitors disconnected, no food, drink or earbuds, no breaks, no leaving camera view, and a room scan on request; detected remote-access malware suspends the exam and the fee may be forfeited. The Context Engineer exam adds a phone or tablet as a second camera; Kryterion recommends Chrome because Firefox and Safari can fail the pairing. You get an unofficial result immediately; it becomes official once Databricks reviews the proctor recording and posts your badge to credentials.databricks.com.

What is in scope is defined by one document: the FAQ says there is only ever one version of each exam and the exam guide is its source of truth, so re-check the guide before you sit. One trap: six exam pages carry section weights their guides omit, the Context Engineer guide carries weights its page omits, and only the Data Engineer Associate prints them in both places. Databricks offers no practice exams and says practice exam results in general are often misleading, lacking a live exam's rigor. Its own AI Prep Guide, linked from every exam page, says that reading alone will not pass any Databricks certification, that you should practice in a Free Edition or trial account, that every major AI assistant confidently uses old product names, and that a mock exam is not a calibrated readiness check.

That last point is why our exam-prep pages exist. There are six, one per exam with a verified bank: Data Engineer Associate, Data Engineer Professional, Spark Developer, Data Analyst, Machine Learning Associate and GenAI Engineer, free, unlimited runs. They are coverage checks against the guide's domains, not readiness scores: every question is original, written from public documentation, none drawn from real exam content. For a daily habit there is the Daily Brick: five questions, three minutes. We have no bank for the Machine Learning Professional, the Context Engineer or the accreditations, and we say so rather than pad it.

What changed recently

Context Engineer Associate went from beta to live. Databricks' May 19, 2026 blog invited people to sit the beta free at Data + AI Summit; its July 16 blog refers to that beta in the past tense, the exam guide covers the version live from July 29, 2026, and Webassessor lists July 29 as the first exam date.

A renewal exam exists for one credential. The FAQ still says recertifying means the full current live exam; the Data Engineer Associate renewal page (guide dated June 15, 2026) is the newer word.

The names moved too. The Data Engineer Professional guide of July 3, 2026 glosses its own renames, "Declarative Automation Bundles (formerly Databricks Asset Bundles)" and "AUTO CDC APIs (formerly APPLY CHANGES)". And the exam pages say "Data + AI Platform", four of the nine guides say "Data Intelligence Platform", and the Platform Administrator page still says "Lakehouse Platform": same product, three names, all live.

Your next step

Pick the row that matches your job, read the exam guide, and run the matching practice set once before you study so you know which domains are weak: Data Engineer Associate for most people, Data Analyst if SQL is your day, Spark Developer if the platform under you keeps changing.
